From concept to printed part: the Meridian Facet Planter.

The Meridian Facet Planter is a studio concept project: a planter 110 mm tall and 150 mm wide, with a faceted surface, designed in Rhino and 3D printed in matte PLA. We use it to show how we work, from the idea to the part in your hand.

1. The idea and the shape

It starts from a simple shape, a planter that widens towards the base, covered in facets that change with the light. Before modelling we fix the dimensions and what the part has to do: hold the soil, stand on its own, print without supports. It is the work we do in every product design project.

2. The 3D model in Rhino

In Rhino we model the faceted surface. This is where we decide whether the part can be printed: facet angles, wall thickness and contact with the build plate. These are the rules of design for manufacturing.

3. Preparation in Bambu Studio

The model goes into Bambu Studio as a print file. Here we choose the material, PLA Matte, and the profile, and check that the planter sits on the plate without supports. Which file to send us is explained in our guide on 3D printing file formats.

4. Printing

Printing the planter

The planter is printed on a Bambu Lab H2D, layer by layer, until the part is complete. It is the same process as our FDM 3D printing service for components, prototypes and small batches.

5. The finished part

The matte finish of the PLA lets the light bring out every facet. From concept to finished part, the route is the same for a planter, an enclosure or a technical component: the material and the tests change.
